TEXT

Located along the historic harbour of Finland’s capital, the competition entry envisions a new cultural landmark for a museum to reflect the heritage of Scandinavian design. The envisioned building draws knowledge from vernacular timber structures of local fishing villages, proposing to reintroduce the material in a larger urban context. The museum will provide the city with a distinct Finnish identity and reflect on the future of ecologically conscientious design.

As a design museum, this proposal honours a process-based concept, questioning the traditional typology of galleries with restoration workshops and loading bays. Across a linear footprint, two twin wings place the curatorial archives and the public gallery programs under one roof. Between them an industrial gantry moves above an experimental gallery-atrium, providing access for large artworks and opening an inner hall for the community of Helsinki.
