TEXT

Slate is stacked to form a workshop for an artist, reminiscent in size and proportion of a small chapel. Cold winters in this region result in a shell composed of stone walls, lined with a thick buffer of organic insulation, made of wool and natural fibres. Storage lines the walls, providing ample space for the artist’s tools and materials, as well as smaller secondary programs, such as a kitchen, pantry, and library.

The space is composed of single room with a large table. Around the peripheries are suggested acts of seating and dining. Two courtyards flank the sides of the main hall, intended for outdoor sculptural works and material collection. The outdoor rooms allow a sequence of events to unfold upon arrival, while keeping out cold winds and sheltering an inner garden.
